India ran the vaccination drive in the world on January 16, which is using two vaccines namely, COVAXIN developed by Bharat Biotech and COVISHIELD developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
The phase 3 results of the COVISHIELD are out and it is being used in the UK, so it is good to go but for COVAXIN the phase three results are not out hence its efficacy is questioned.
We have to note that India has a history of immunization with the Universal Immunization Program but the COVID 19 vaccination drive is both public-private participation which is under the purview of the World Health Organization.
Every vaccine goes through 3 trials the first trial checks for safety also if the vaccine is able to derive a response from our immune system. The next trial or the 3rd trial checks for side effects on a large scale.
When we talk about COVAXIN the result for its 3rd trial is not yet out hence the efficacy of the vaccine is questioned. Hey, we have to understand that the 3rd trial is an important one, and if there are a few modifications done in the 3rd trial it will affect the vaccine administration in general.
What we need here is more caution to be taken into consideration to avoid scepticism. there is a need for trust-building and robust communication strategy so that people understand the importance of the vaccine and this happens to be a very crucial stage for the government.
hey, hence the author says that amidst the vaccine roll out there is a critical need for a climate of transparency and data sharing scrutiny and debate.
Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas Debate
The author here talks about the Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas idea put forth by the current ruling Govt and how it is continuously failing to keep up the same.
The author points out that India has a Muslim population which is one of the largest in the world and the wrongs that have been taking place against the minorities.
The author first speaks about the ‘Love Jihad’ ordinance bought forth by the UP Govt is just against some basic tenets of individual liberty, then he points out the Tablighi Jamat scenario that happened amidst the pandemic that targeted a set of individuals where some time ago the Namaste Trump event happened that could potentially be the super spreading arena.
He speaks about how the ruling party speaks highly of leaders like Dr. BR Ambedkar, Sardar Patel and even Shyama Prakash Mukherjee who regarded and revered the minorities, but the party doesn’t run in accordance to their words.
He again points out to the anti-Love Jihad ordinance scenario and says that it is based on the fictional concept called as Love Jihad and jives straight at the individual liberty and personal choice of the individuals.
Now the Supreme court is to intervene in this matter and it should the repeat the same thing that it did with the Hadiya case from some years ago.
The author provides that the Supreme court has done a good job with regards to the farm bills protest, but it has not done the same with the Citizenship amendment act also the Central Vista judgement.
Hence, the Govt has quite a role to play here and all eyes are on the party to fulfill the promise of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.
Special Marriage Act Judgment
The Allahabad High Court ruling has now come out about the aspects related to the Special Marriage Act 1954.
Previously, under this act, the couple who is doing an inter-faith marriage had to provide a notice 30 days in advance to the marriage officer and the same would be made public and would attract objections. Now, this clause has been struck down by the court as it has said that it attacks a person’s or couple’s personal liberty and fundamental rights.
The editorial also provides that these clauses of the judgment running at crossroads of the UP anti-love jihad ordinance, so only time will tell about the implementation and the procedures that will be taken forward.
The Supreme court when let to be intervened has to take key decisions and make sure that the personal liberty of the person is respected.
